ANSS Catalog as Input to EEW
ANSS catalog is considered an authoritative source of earthquake locations and magnitudes. Forecasts are compared against ANSS events to check forecasts.
Issues include:
- Example shows that some events like UU network do not have event id's, and we want to use event id as a unique identifier for each event. We decided create a event id from UU events from the timestamp, useful for identification purposes.
- Another example is the lack of two columns of information for some events which can cause offsets in tables if loaded from text files with space delimiters. We plan to handle this by testing columns and starting to parse again when we find a 0.0 field the RMS field, not an integer. Also said, test column for int or float. If float, no gap info provided from catalog.
- Timeliness of appearance of events in catalog is an important issue. Curently we drive our evaluation by ANSS events, so we have to wait until the event shows up before we can evaluate the system response. We can work around by making up an event with parameters from other sources, and adding into our testing system, then we must update when offical ANSS is available.
