Taken together, the SCEC Community Models provide a unique and robust cyberinfrastructure for the collaborative encoding of our cumulative knowledge of the San Andreas system, including the observa- tional and modeling uncertainties. The original “CXMs” were structural representations of seismic veloci- ties (CVM) and active faults (CFM), which have been iteratively combined into a Unified Structural Repre- sentation (USR) [17]. In SCEC4, we have undertaken an ambitious (and unfinished) effort to develop community geodetic and stress models that can represent the kinematic (CGM) and dynamic (CSM) states of the fault system consistent with the USR (Figure). SCEC5 research will further expand and improve the CXMs, adding thermal and rheological models. A priority will be the proper representation of model uncertainties for all CXMs.
