This is a collection of SCEC Ground Motion simulation visualizations.

Ground Motion Simulation 4D Dataset

SCEC worked with IEEE animation group in 2006 to provide and define a 4D (x,y,z,t) earthquake simulation dataset that could be used in an IEEE visualization contest. The SCEC IEEE earthquake simulation data set (4D dataset) (2006) is posted online. The web pages contain descriptions of the data, and links to where the data can be downloaded. (Kim Olsen, Phil Maechling et al 2006)

Example Ground Motion Animations

This map view animations shows the M8 rupture propagation south on the San Andreas Fault in southern California using Ely style color-scales. Based on the file-metadata these ground motions are based on the y-component of motion. (Amit Chourasia, Geoff Ely, et al 2010)

Ground motion simulation for State-wide California Earthquake using paraview. (Scott Callaghan et all 2016)

Rupture simulation showing Plastic Yielding (Dan Roten et al 2015)

Fault and wave propagation animation comparing waves from smooth fault and velocity model to waves from rough fault and velocity model with small scale heterogeneities. (Kim Olsen et al 2014)

The M8 animations that follows the rupture from central California to Mexico, showing velocity magnitude as height field. (Amit Chourasia et al 2010)

Comparison showing difference in ground motions produced by North to South, South to North, and Bi-lateral San Andreas ruptures (Kim Olsen et al 2009)

Map view animation using Glyphsea visualization for wall to wall San Andrea bi-lateral rupture (Amit Chourasia, Kim Olsen, Yifeng Cui et al)

Map view animations showing side-by-side comparison of ground motions produced by 3 different ground motion simulation methods (Graves, AWP, and Hercules).

Demonstration of experimental vector visualization technique (Glyphsea) applied to M8 rupture (Amit Chourasia, Kim Olsen, Yifeng Cui et al 2010)

Dynamic Rupture Simulations

Comparison showing rupture on fault surface from a dynamic rupture simulation and from a kinematic simulation. Shows only the fault surface and not the ground motion values.

Fault surface slip animations comparing results from kinematic rupture and multiple ShakeOut dynamic rupture simulations (Steve Day, Kim Olsen et al 2008)

Building Response Animations

Building response animation showing 18 story steel frame response to M8 ground motions records (Swaminathan Krishnan et al 2010)
