SCEC ground motion simulation projects use carefully curated ground motion observational data in many of our validation activities. Here we collect event-oriented observational data sets and processing methods used to prepare the observations for use in SCEC validation activities.

Data Management Plans

To support High-F validation work, SCEC software group will curate and distribute observational data sets for use in High-F validation activities.

We will assemble and post observation data, simulation results, and processing codes used for comparisons.

Starting with La Habra, and continued for other validation events if useful.

Main elements of Validation Data Management:

  1. Event observational data (Parameters and external ground motion records)
  2. Event simulation data (synthetic seismograms, and source information)
  3. Hosting and Access (Distribution to group)
  4. Processing codes (format conversion codes, rotation, filtering, decimation, interpolation amplitude extraction)

Event Observational Data

  • Earthquake parameters including origin time retrieved from USGS combat
  • Initial observational data will be retrieved from strong motion.org for La Habra
  • Observational Data
  • BBP File Example

Event Simulation Data

  • Earthquake parameters including origin time provided by modelers
  • Synthetic observational data provided at selected lat/lon (including lat/lon, dt)
    • Output format description provided (simulation volume etc) and extraction code in data
  • Example Simulation Results

Hosting and Access

  • SCEC provides web-based access to
    • observational data in multiple formats (bbp, sac)
    • metadata files to describe source and processing of observational data
    • AttrName:AttrValue metadata header for observational data
    • Specially prepared observational data (trim, rotate, filtered) in multiple formats
    • Amplitude results
  • Example of BBP Loma Pieta Simulation Results
  • SCEC provides web-based access to
    • simulation results in multiple formats (bbp, sac)
    • metadata files to describe source and processing of synthetics
    • Specially prepared synthetic data (trim, rotate, filtered) in multiple formats
    • Amplitude results
    • amplitude results
  • SCEC provides web-based comparisons between
    • Validation data sets similar to the broadband data distribution web tools
    • selected observational seismograms compared to selected synthetic seismograms

Code Management

SCEC creates public github repository for HighF validation data processing with code commit privileges to members of the High-F group.

Scientific Review

  • SCEC Science groups review software development and specify the processing and comparisons in each Event validation data collection

Future Capabilities

  • Map-based interface to observations and synthetics
  • API to access validation data
